Baas B

Baas B is the stage name of Rodney Lammers, a white Dutch musician who started as a DJ in Amsterdam in the early 1980s. He drew from Jamaican reggae and dancehall at a time when those scenes were predominantly black, which brought some skepticism his way. His 1991 single 'Clubbin' became a breakthrough hit, leading to albums like 'Amsterdamned' and 'Don't Sweat the Technique' in the following years.

His songs often mixed dancehall rhythms with hip-hop touches and lyrics that could be playful or socially pointed. Tracks like 'Je Hebt Een Snor' and 'Kont 101' show his knack for catchy, sometimes cheeky party tunes, while others carried more serious messages. He worked with artists such as Shaggy and Beenie Man, and in 2003 faced a ban from an Amsterdam concert after remarks about immigration policy.

Baas B has kept recording over the decades, with albums like 'Back to the Roots' in 2010 and a 25-year retrospective in 2016. He also started a foundation focused on music opportunities for young people. While he's often cited as an important figure in bringing dancehall to the Netherlands, his music stays grounded in the club-ready beats and direct delivery that first caught on with 'Clubbin'.
