Baba de Cobra came together in Salvador, Brazil, with a lineup that included Mestre Armandinho Macêdo on percussion, Neto Gonçalves on vocals, Bira Cássia on guitar, and João Carlos Moura on bass. Their music pulled from the city's Afro-Brazilian traditions while mixing in samba, reggae, and rock elements.

Their 1978 single "Unha de Gato" became their most recognizable track, with its rhythmic pulse and lyrics that referenced a medicinal plant. Other songs like "Santo Forte" and "Muda" appeared on their self-titled debut album that same year. They went on to release several more records, including "Um Passo à Frente" in 1979 and "O Cobra Vai Fumar" in 1982.

Their sound and cryptic writing sometimes drew criticism from more traditional listeners. Baba de Cobra's last studio album, "Cobra: A Dança do Sol," came out in 1992.
