Babbie Mason was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1921. Her father was a minister, and she grew up in a musical household. In the 1940s, she moved to Los Angeles and joined the choir at the Church of God in Christ.
It was in Los Angeles that she met Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who invited Mason to tour with her. This led to her solo career. In 1954, she recorded 'He Keeps Me Singing,' which became a gospel standard. Other songs like 'Each One Can Reach One' and 'Jubilate' also became part of her repertoire.
Mason faced discrimination as a Black woman in the gospel music industry. In the 1970s, she had a legal dispute with her former record label, United Artists, over royalties. The case settled out of court.
Her discography includes albums like 'Babbie Mason Sings' from 1958 and 'Songs of Faith' from 1963. She collaborated with artists including The Pilgrim Travelers and The Gospelaires.
