Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth formed in New York City in 1972. They built a local following with a sound that mixed glam rock and punk elements, though wider recognition took a few years to arrive.

Their 1979 song "Mexican" became their breakthrough track, with its catchy melody and politically charged lyrics. The song's explicit content did cause some radio stations to stop playing it, but it remains their most well-known work alongside tracks like "Wells Fargo" and "Sad But Rich."

The band's lineup included vocalist Stan Ridgway and guitarist Chris Stein during their early period. They released albums like "The Babe Ruth Story" in 1980 and "Mojo Psycho" in 1981, continuing to explore different sounds and lyrical themes. Ridgway and Stein eventually left the group, but Babe Ruth kept recording through the 1980s and 1990s with other musicians.
