Bad Pollyanna formed with Rachel Haden on vocals and bass, Matt Sharp from Weezer on guitar, Josh Freese on drums, and Mike Watt on bass. They released their debut album 'Awake Now' in 1998, which included the title track that became something of an anthem. Their self-titled follow-up came out in 2000.

Haden's departure in 2001 created some turbulence for the band. They also dealt with a lawsuit over songwriting credits around that time. Their songs like 'Epilogue (Invincible Girl)' and 'Hollow' showed their particular blend of melodic rock with introspective lyrics.
