Archive material and source history
Bagatelle formed in Dublin in 1978 with Liam Ó Maonlaí on vocals, guitar, and mandolin, Seán Ó Riada on vocals, bouzouki, and guitar, and Dermot O'Connor on drums and percussion. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year. In 1983, they released 'Leeson Street Lady,' a ballad written by Ó Maonlaí about a woman working on that Dublin street. The song became their most recognizable piece.
They followed that with albums like 'Second Violin' in 1984 and 'Light Years Away' in 1989. Their sound mixed traditional Irish instrumentation with folk and pop elements. The band's lineup changed over time, with O'Connor departing in 1985.
