Bairro '93 formed in Porto Alegre in 1993, led by rapper Thaíde. Their music mixed funk, hip-hop, and samba, and songs like "Eu Quero Ser" connected with listeners in Brazil's neighborhoods.
Their lyrics often addressed social issues, which sometimes brought them into conflict with authorities. In 2005, Thaíde was seriously injured in a car accident but continued with the group.
They released albums including "Bairro '93," "O Samba Nossa Verdade," "Homens de Preto," and "É o Bicho." Other members included DJ Negralha and Afrika Bambaataa Jr.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
