Archive material and source history
Balacabala formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s with vocalist Joyce Tortora, guitarist and producer Kiko Dinucci, and bassist Rodrigo Amarante. They worked with various percussionists and other musicians over time. Their debut album 'Bomba Ião' came out in 1994, and the title track became a hit. They followed it with albums like '2001' and 'Marisco na Taberna'.
Their music mixed samba rhythms with electronic dance elements, which didn't immediately appeal to traditional samba listeners or electronic music fans. They took a break at some point, then returned in 2015 for shows and an album called 'Balacabala 5.0.' Since then, the members have focused on their own projects.
