Archive material and source history
Balaio de Baião formed in Fortaleza in 1992, with founding members Zé Renato, Chico César, and Dominguinhos coming together around a shared interest in traditional Brazilian rhythms like baião. They started playing local bars and festivals, and put out their self-titled debut album in 1994.
Zé Renato wrote "O Balanço," which became their best-known song. It's a straightforward, catchy tune that caught on at weddings and celebrations. They also recorded "Paixão Feroz."
In 1998, there was some noise about their version of "Aquarela do Brasil" and questions of plagiarism, but it turned out the song was in the public domain. The band went on to release several more albums.
