Balzakians formed in 2002 around childhood friends Josh Caterer on vocals and guitar and Chris Slusarenko on bass. Their early EPs had a raw, introspective feel, pulling from post-punk and dream pop. The band's debut full-length album, also called 'Lost in Translation', came out in 2006 and gave them a wider audience. That title track, along with songs like 'Pure Loneliness' and 'You Don't Even Love Yourself', defined their sound with its melancholic melodies and lyrics about alienation.
After disbanding in 2010, Balzakians got back together in 2015. Their lineup has shifted over time, with James Wallace joining on drums around 2008. They've kept making music that leans into themes of doubt and loss, as heard in tracks like 'Sea Of Doubts' and 'Departures'.
