The Spanish duo behind 'Macarena' created one of the 90s' most inescapable party anthems.
If you want to understand Banana Split, start with 'Macarena', it's the whole story. For something less familiar, try 'Vamos a La Playa' or 'Dançando Coladinho' from their later work.
When 'Macarena' landed in 1995, it became more than a song, it was a cultural event. That simple dance and rhythm turned up everywhere from wedding receptions to political rallies, even as the band faced questions about the melody's origins. For better or worse, 'Macarena' defined a certain kind of 90s pop moment, and Banana Split was at the center of it.
Manuel and José Ruiz formed Banana Split in Seville in 1993. Their 1995 album 'Ven Bailar' included 'Macarena,' which became a worldwide phenomenon, but later albums like 'Los Reyes del Baile' and 'La Banda' never quite recaptured that level of attention. They released 'El Reencuentro' in 2013, but 'Macarena' remains their signature.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
