A Seattle band whose folk-rock sound evolved through lineup shifts and vocal cord scares.
If you want to hear where they started, put on The Funeral. For where they ended up, try Things Are Great from 2022.
The Funeral got them wider attention in 2006, and songs like No One's Gonna Love You have turned up in films and TV shows. Their music started with a folk-rock feel but moved toward more experimental sounds on later records. Bass Song (Part Two demo) shows that shift in action.
They formed in 2004 with Matt Brooke, Ben Bridwell, and Chris Early. Brooke and Early left in 2007 and 2010, leaving Bridwell and Creighton Barrett as the consistent core. In 2011, Bridwell dealt with a vocal cord issue that temporarily threatened his singing.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
