Band The Nexts formed in 1992 with Justin Green on vocals and guitar, Mark Johnson on bass, and Chris Davis on drums. They came from a small town in California. In 1994, they signed with a major label and put out their debut album 'Nocturnal Visions.' The single 'Book of Shadows' from that album got a lot of radio play and became their best-known song.
Their music had a raw, atmospheric quality that fit with what was happening in alternative rock at the time. The lyrics on songs like 'Book of Shadows' and 'Roses Wild In The Winter' often dealt with cryptic or mystical themes, which led to some talk about the band and the occult. The members denied any real involvement with that sort of thing, but the association stuck around.
As things got bigger, the pressure seemed to take a toll. Green had some well-documented struggles with substance abuse and depression, which eventually affected the band's work and led to their breakup.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
