Band Zonder Banaan

Band Zonder Banaan formed in Nijmegen in 1981 with Lennart Nijgh, Henk Westbroek, Jan Robrechts, and Jan Hendriks. Their name came from a chaotic early performance where someone yelled for "alle remmen los", all brakes off, which became their breakout song. That track, "Alle Remmen Los," caught on in the Netherlands with its playful energy and nonsense interjections, turning up at parties and festivals.

They put out albums like "De Banaan is Rijk" in 1983 and "Schaatsen in de Hel" in 1985. Their lyrics sometimes touched on sex and drugs, which drew some criticism, but they kept doing their thing. Other songs in their catalog include "Bananen song," "Bommetje," and "De Bankzitter."

Nijgh handled lead vocals and wrote the often absurd lyrics, while Westbroek played guitar and sang. Robrechts was on bass and Hendriks on drums. Their sound was loose and humorous, connected to a certain Dutch alternative scene of the time.
