Banda Aixa Zouk formed in Bahia in 1984, with Jorge Zarath, Wagner Carvalho, and Adson Lima coming together around zouk music. Their debut album 'Aixa Zouk' came out the following year and included 'Mais Que Um Amigo,' a song that caught on quickly in Brazil.
That track became their calling card, though not without some noise. There were claims that 'Mais Que Um Amigo' borrowed too heavily from a Haitian song, which the band denied. They kept playing shows and built a reputation for energetic live performances.
Adson Lima left the group in 2003, leaving Zarath and Carvalho to continue. Then in 2016, Wagner Carvalho died unexpectedly at 52. The band's other songs like 'Cachoeira' and 'Pra Ficar' remain part of their set when they perform.
