Banda Atrito formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1987, with an early lineup that included Carlos Malta on vocals, Jorge Prazeres on guitar, Paulo Ricardo on bass, and Alexandre Dengue on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1989, and the track 'Fruteira' became something of an anthem for them.
They put out several albums through the 1990s, like 'Aldeia' in 1992 and 'Carnaval dos Animais' in 1995. Their songs often mixed samba, reggae, and rock, and they worked with other Brazilian artists including Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and Marisa Monte.
