Banda Ave Maria formed in São Paulo in 1992 with five musicians: Elizeu Gomes on vocals, Anderson Freire handling vocals and guitar, Emerson Pinheiro on keyboards, Josias Alexandre on bass, and Anderson Silva on drums. They started out playing gospel music with little recognition or financial backing.
Their 1997 debut album took its title from the song "Seu Nome É Jesus," which became their breakthrough track. That song's straightforward melody and devotional lyrics connected with Brazilian gospel audiences in a way that lifted the band from obscurity.
In 2003, the band drew criticism from some quarters for performing at a secular music festival alongside non-gospel artists. They responded that they saw it as an opportunity to reach listeners outside church circles.
The group has released several albums since, including "Creio em Ti" in 2000 and "Simplesmente Jesus" in 2003. Their lineup eventually settled at four members, with Gomes, Freire, Pinheiro, and Silva continuing to perform and record.
