Banda Azúkar formed in 1996 in the San Carlos neighborhood of Santo Domingo. They started as a merengue band that didn't quite fit the traditional mold, which made it hard to book shows at first. Their sound eventually found an audience by mixing merengue with salsa and bachata.
In 2002, the single "Chora Chora" became a hit across the Dominican Republic and Latin America. That song, along with tracks like "Como baila la morena (Viver a vida)" and "Latinos," helped establish them internationally. They released several albums in the following years, including "El Poder del Merengue" in 2004 and a live recording from Madison Square Garden in 2007.
Anthony Romeo Santos was the frontman when the group started. Their lineup has seen some changes over time, but they kept playing their particular blend of rhythms.
