Banda Brilho started playing in the late 1990s in Santarém, Pará, a town in the Amazon region. The band's early lineup included Wanderley Andrade on vocals, his son Wanderley Andrade Jr. on bass, and Rogerinho on drums. They worked with what they had in a place where instruments and venues weren't easy to come by.
In 2002, they put out their first album, 'Amazon Soul,' which had the song 'Pigmeu' on it. That track got attention quickly, though not all of it was positive, some listeners felt it handled indigenous themes clumsily. Other songs like 'A Deriva' and 'Caminhos' also found an audience.
After that first album, Banda Brilho kept recording. They released 'Ritmo do Pará' in 2004 and continued making music that drew from the sounds around them, without much of the national spotlight drama that followed 'Pigmeu.'
