Banda do Vaqueiro e Sousa Cobra came together in Ceará, a northeastern Brazilian state where the equestrian sport of vaquejada has been practiced for generations. The group's founder, Antônio de Sousa, was a working cowboy who went by the name Sousa Cobra. He started writing songs about the life and culture around him, pulling in other musicians including his brother Vaqueiro and a player named Zé Pitoco.

Their music is built around vaquejada, the cattle-roping sport that defines much of rural life in that part of Brazil. One of their well-known tracks is "Da Vaquejada Pro Bar," which sketches a straightforward scene moving from the dusty arena to the local watering hole. The sound is direct, with rhythms that feel connected to the movement of the sport itself.

As they gained listeners, some of their material drew attention for touching on social or political themes. This led to occasional friction with authorities, including periods of censorship. But the group kept playing for audiences in the northeast who recognized their own experiences in the songs. The music stayed grounded in the specifics of vaqueiro life rather than reaching for broader pop formulas.
