Banda Flora came together in Salvador, Bahia, with brothers Rodrigo and Rogério Flora at the center. Their music drew from the local sounds of samba and axé, but they worked without the brass sections common in Brazilian popular music, which made some early listeners skeptical.
Their song "Amor Oculto" connected with people when it came out in 2014. The track deals with unrequited love, and its straightforward approach seemed to resonate. Another song, "Explicação," also appears among their better-known work.
Some found the band's lyrics too direct at times, but they kept making music their way. They built a following without conforming to every expectation of what a Brazilian band should sound like.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
