Banda Jovem formed in Recife in 1997 with Elson Junior and Tayra Marques on vocals, Júnior Naylor on guitar, Roberto Pacheco on bass, Gustavo Almeida on keyboards, and Renato Bandeira on drums. They put out their self-titled debut album the following year.
Their song "Corsário" became a hit, with a melody that stuck in people's heads and lyrics about pirates and the sea. After Elson Junior left in 2002, Tayra Marques became the main singer.
Some of their lyrics drew criticism, like the song "Cidade Maravilhosa" that some said promoted drug use. The band defended their writing as artistic expression.
