Banda Lamerengue formed in the Dominican Republic in 1992, started by brothers Josue and Robert Jimenez with their cousins Emmanuel and Claudio Jimenez. They were playing merengue but with a pop sensibility that caught on locally with songs like "El Coco Loco" and "A Comer Cocos."
Their 1997 album "Lábios Divididos" changed things. The title track became a hit across Latin America and beyond, turning them into an international touring act. That song remains their most recognizable work.
After that breakthrough, they kept releasing albums through the 2000s, including "Sin Miedo" in 1999 and "El Sueño" in 2001. The band faced a legal dispute with a former member around 2010 but continued making music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
