Banda Magá formed in Salvador, Brazil in the early 2000s, with Magá Moura on vocals and percussion. Their sound mixed axé, samba, and reggae, drawing from the musical traditions of Bahia. The single "A Falta" became a breakout hit for them.

In 2006, Magá Moura was arrested for marijuana possession, which brought media attention. The band released several albums including their self-titled debut in 2002, "Ao Vivo No Canecão" in 2004, and "Axé de Verão" in 2007. Other members included Alan Moraes on guitar, Ulisses Santana on bass, Samuel Silva on drums, and Jorjão on keyboards.
