Banda Magia do Momento formed in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, in the mid-1980s with Edinho Souza as their frontman. Their debut album 'Só Melhores' came out in 1987, and they found wider recognition with their second album 'Água Mineral' the following year. That record included 'Saudades,' a ballad Souza wrote that became their most well-known song.
'Saudades' connected with listeners across Brazil, tapping into a feeling of longing that gave the band a national profile. They had another popular track called 'Tatuagem' around the same period. In 1990, Souza was arrested on drug possession charges, which created some public turbulence for the group.
They kept recording after that, though the attention around their music sometimes mixed with talk about Souza's stage style and the band's commercial direction. Their work from that era, including those early hits, still gets played.
