Banda Mil formed in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1999, with Carlos Mario Castro on vocals, Dagoberto Cruz on drums, Alfredo Pérez on bass, and Javier Bedoya on accordion. Their sound mixed vallenato with salsa and merengue rhythms, which caught on locally before spreading further.
Their 2003 debut album "Arrocha con Mil" gave the band its breakthrough, with the title track "Arrocha" becoming a hit across Latin America. That song, along with others like "Loucuras de amor" and "Não Sei Viver Sem Você," helped define what became known as arrocha music, uptempo, melodic, and popular especially in coastal regions.
In 2007, Castro faced drug trafficking charges that led to a temporary hiatus, but the band eventually resumed. Their lineup has changed over time, though Castro, Cruz, and Pérez have remained core members. They've worked with artists including Juanes, Carlos Vives, and Wilfrido Vargas.
Banda Mil has released several albums since their debut, among them "De Fiesta con Mil" in 2005, "El Show del Año" in 2007, and "Sentimientos" in 2013.
