Banda Nagueta formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1994, a group of musicians working with Afro-Brazilian sounds and contemporary beats. They played local bars and festivals, developing their material before recording.
Their debut album 'Batismo de Sangue' came out in 1996, and the title track became a national hit. The song drew from Candomblé rhythms and themes, with lyrics that touched on ritual and struggle. It got plenty of radio play and connected with listeners, though some critics raised questions about its content.
Other songs from that period include 'Espelho da Alma' and 'Etnocultura'. The band toured Brazil following the album's release, playing to larger crowds than they had before.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
