Banda Pérola Negra formed in São Paulo in 1991, with singer Gabriel Moura, guitarist João Barone, bassist Carlinhos, and drummer Binho. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year. They worked in a mix of samba-rock and pop, and songs like 'Separação' and 'Efeito do Álcool' became staples on Brazilian radio.
They released seven studio albums between 1992 and 2007, including 'Pérola Negra II' and 'Músicas para Curtir o Fim do Milênio'. The lineup changed in the early 2000s, but they kept recording and playing shows. They sometimes performed with other Brazilian musicians like Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil.
Their music stayed in rotation, and their later work included tracks such as 'Doi de Mais' and 'Tema de Novela'. They were a steady presence in Brazilian pop for over fifteen years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
