Banda Raça formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1985, started by brothers Alexandre and Anderson Barreto. They played local festivals and bars with a mix of samba-reggae, axé, and funk that caught on in the region.
Their 1992 album "Raça" broke through nationally, with the track "Casei" becoming a hit. Other songs like "Cores de Cabelo" and "Paciência" followed. The band has seen lineup changes over time, with members including Sérgio Durval, Toni Babalu, Marcio Victor, and Fabio Alves alongside the Barreto brothers.
In 2011, lead singer Alexandre Barreto faced drug possession charges that created difficulties, but the group continued. Their music has helped bring Bahian sounds to wider audiences.
