Banda Só de Improviso formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s around vocalist Luiz Carlos Ribeiro, known as Luizinho. Their name translates to 'Band of Improvisation,' which was a straightforward description of how they worked. They built songs from spontaneous jams that mixed samba, funk, and jazz, and this loose approach gave their live shows a particular energy.
One of their popular tracks was 'Pedido de Namoro,' which came out in 1992. The song's lyrics about casual relationships drew some criticism at the time, but the band didn't change course. They kept playing and recording, putting out albums like their 1991 debut and later ones such as 'Improvisando' and 'Vida Real.'
Besides Luizinho, the group included guitarist Antônio Carlos (Toninho), bassist Sérgio Carvalho (Serginho), and drummer Márcio Rocha (Marquinho). They weren't trying to fit a mold, and that made their music stand out in Brazilian pop during those years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
