The group was led by vocalist Saulo Fernandes, and their music pulled from various Brazilian styles including axé, frevo, and samba, often with electronic and hip-hop touches. They called their approach "Novíssimo Tupinambá," a reference to Brazil's indigenous Tupinambá people.
Their 2006 album Novíssimo Tupinambá gave the style its name. The band faced some criticism early on from those who felt their fusion of traditional sounds with contemporary production was inauthentic, but they maintained it was a form of cultural celebration.
Other albums included Coração Cigano (2002), Axé Bahia (2004), and Raízes de Aço (2008). The core lineup featured Saulo Fernandes on vocals and guitar, Roberto Barreto on drums, Luiz Caldas on bass, Edgard Scandurra on guitar, and Betão Aguiar on keyboards.
