Banda Taxi Swing formed in São Paulo in 1996, a group of friends who started playing together. Their debut single "Kika Sem Parar" became a hit that year, giving them quick recognition. The band's sound mixed Brazilian samba with funk and hip-hop elements, creating an upbeat, danceable style that caught on in the mid-to-late 1990s.
They followed up with songs like "Na Boquinha" and "Pepeka Louca," keeping to their formula of catchy rhythms and celebratory lyrics. The lineup included vocalist Thiago "Taxista" Soares, guitarist Denilson "Swing" Sousa, keyboardist Márcio "Marquinho" Martins, bassist Flávio "Flavinho" Ribeiro, and drummer Henrique Santiago.
Over several years, they released albums including Swing do Taxi in 1997, Samba do Meu Coração in 1998, and Táxi Swing in 2000. Their music drew from Brazilian artists like Jorge Ben Jor and Gilberto Gil, though some critics felt they leaned too commercial. The band faced some copyright disputes and questions about their sound's authenticity alongside their popularity.
"Kika Sem Parar" remains their best-known track, a staple of 1990s Brazilian party music. Their blend of samba with contemporary rhythms found an audience, and they kept recording into the early 2000s with albums like Vem Dançar and Sou Brasileiro.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
