Background notes

Archive material and source history

Banda Uhêhba formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1980s with Gileno Oliveira on vocals, Beto Bomfim on guitar and vocals, Roberto Barreto on bass, and Gilson Lima on drums. They released their first album in 1985 and put out several more through the 1980s and 1990s, including a live record in 1995.

Their 1989 single "Balada Triste" drew criticism from conservative groups for its lyrics about street children. The song's straightforward depiction of poverty was considered too graphic by some, though it eventually found its audience. Another track, "Pra Ficar Feliz," appears among their better-known songs.

The group's music incorporated elements of samba, reggae, and axé. They recorded steadily through the 1990s, with Uhêhba VII arriving in 1997.
