Banda Was

Banda Was formed in Barcelona in 2005, starting as a trio with Alicia Echevarría on piano and vocals, Ferrán Martínez on guitar, bass, and synthesizer, and Xavi Martínez handling electronic instruments and recording. Their music leaned into experimental electronic territory, often described as ambient with ethereal synths and hypnotic rhythms.

Their 2008 album "Deriva" gave them their most recognizable track, the title song. The band's sound was built around haunting vocals and unconventional techniques, which sometimes drew criticism from more traditional corners of the music press.

Personal struggles with mental health among the members became part of their story, both as inspiration and difficulty. They developed a loyal following despite, or perhaps because of, their willingness to work outside established genres.
