Bando de Conga formed in Salvador, Bahia in 2006. They started playing small venues around the city, working with a sound that mixed funk, reggae, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Their 2011 single "Catupiri" became a breakout hit in Brazil, built around a catchy groove and playful lyrics that got people dancing.
Other songs like "Jacada" and "Pedrão" followed a similar pattern, upbeat, percussive tracks that felt rooted in Bahia's street music. The band's lineup included Ramon Cruz on vocals and guitar, Léo Santana, Bruno Magnata, Luan Santana, and Érico Brás handling percussion and vocals.
They released albums like "Catupiri" in 2011 and "Deixa Rolar" in 2013. Their music sometimes drew criticism for being unconventional, but it also connected with listeners who appreciated its direct, rhythmic energy. They collaborated with artists from the Bahian scene, including Timbalada and Daniela Mercury.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
