Bando de Marias formed in Porto Alegre in the early 1980s, led by singer and songwriter Donizete Machado. Their music pulled from samba, reggae, and rock, and one of their early songs, "Meus Tons," became a popular ballad in Brazil.
The band's lineup has stayed fairly consistent, with Machado joined by guitarist Clovis Mendes, bassist Jader Marconatto, and drummer Eládio Ribeiro. They put out their first album, "Nosso Canto," in 1987, which included "Meus Tons" and another track called "Falando de Amor." Later records like "O Que É Que a Baiana Tem" (1993) and "Nação" (2002) followed.
In 1995, they drew some criticism for a song called "O Homem dos Olhos Azuis," which some listeners felt dealt in racial stereotypes. The band defended the work, saying it was meant to reflect parts of Brazilian society.
