Bando Gaúcho formed in Rio Grande do Sul in 1974, with original members including brothers Carlos Magrão and João Carlos Machado, guitarist Pepe Vargas, and bassist Marcelo do Nascimento. They worked from the traditional gaucho music of southern Brazil, trying to give it a more modern shape that might reach a wider audience.
Their 1979 song "Amansador de Cavalo" became something of a signature piece, a ballad about a gaucho's work with horses. Other songs like "Gaúcho, Campeiro e Taura" and "Quando Tapeia o Chapelão" carried forward that regional sound.
Over time, they collaborated with artists outside their immediate scene, including Milton Nascimento and Gilberto Gil. They kept recording through the years, with albums like "Terra Dourada" in 1992 and "Alma Serrana" in 2008.
