Archive material and source history
Barba de Bode formed in São Paulo in the early 1990s with José Miguel Wisnik on vocals and guitar, Vinicius Cantuária on vocals and guitar, Marcelo Costa on bass, and Ciro Pessoa on drums. Their music pulled from punk, rock, and forró, which gave it a rough, hybrid feel that didn't fit neatly into any one scene.
In 1996 they released the single "Animal," which became their breakout track. It had a raw, driving energy that caught on, and it's still one of the songs people remember them by. They put out four albums between 1994 and 2001, including a self-titled debut and later records like "Babalaô" and "Desorden Social."
The band broke up in 2002. Afterward, Wisnik worked as a solo musician and writer, and Cantuária collaborated with artists like David Byrne and Arto Lindsay. Costa and Pessoa kept playing with other projects. Their records, especially songs like "Desperto Pela Dor" and "Homem Trovão," still turn up in playlists and get talked about in Brazil.
