Editor's note

Barbara, the French singer with piano and pain

A post-war voice who wrote her own songs about longing and loss.

For a sense of her style, start with "Dis, Quand Reviendras-tu?" or "Göttingen." Both have that direct, piano-driven quality she was known for.

She emerged in France after World War II with a style built around her own piano playing and distinctive vocals. Songs like "Dis, Quand Reviendras-tu?" and "L'aigle noir" dealt directly with personal reflection, while "Göttingen" remains one of her most remembered works. She often wrote or co-wrote her material, which gave her songs an intimate, lived-in quality.

Her 1960 debut album Barbara à l'Écluse included early songs such as "La Solitude" and "Nantes." She worked with arranger André Popp on many recordings and collaborated with lyricist Gérard Jouannest on songs including "Ma plus belle histoire d'amour." Later albums like Le Mal de vivre contained what would become signature songs.

Barbara was born Monique Serf in 1930 and took her stage name as a tribute to her father, a Jewish tailor who died in the Holocaust. She emerged in post-World War II France with a style built around her own piano playing and distinctive vocals, often writing or co-writing her material. Her songs like "Dis, Quand Reviendras-tu?" and "L'aigle noir" dealt directly with longing, loss, and personal reflection.

Her 1960 debut album, Barbara à l'Écluse, included early songs such as "La Solitude" and "Nantes." She worked with arranger André Popp on many of her early recordings and collaborated with lyricist Gérard Jouannest on songs including "Ma plus belle histoire d'amour." In 1961 she released an album of songs by Georges Brassens, and her 1964 album Le Mal de vivre contained the song "Dis, Quand Reviendras-tu?"

Other songs in her repertoire include "Göttingen," "Ce matin-là," and "La musique." She died in 1997.
