Barbara Acklin was born in Oakland, California in 1943. She first sang with the all-female vocal group The Cookies before stepping out on her own. Her debut album 'Love Makes a Woman' came out in 1968, the same year she recorded 'Am I the Same Girl,' which became her signature song.
That 1968 single, 'Am I the Same Girl,' is the track most people remember. It had a particular resonance that stuck around. She followed it with other songs like 'Just Ain't No Love' and the title track from her debut, 'Love Makes a Woman.'
She worked with some notable session players, including drummer James Gadson, bassist Chuck Rainey, and guitarist Cornell Dupree. Her recorded output through the 1970s included albums like 'I Did It,' 'Love's Gone Away,' and 'It Is What It Is.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
