Editor's note

Barbara Mandrell, the country star who hosted her own TV show.

A singer who balanced chart hits with a family-friendly television presence in the 1980s.

For a quick sense of her style, try 'You Can Eat Crackers In My Bed Anytime' and 'Some Things Never Change.' They're both from her top songs list and show her range.

She had a knack for songs that felt like conversations, whether it was the sly humor of 'You Can Eat Crackers In My Bed Anytime' or the steady warmth of 'Some Things Never Change.' Her TV variety show with her sisters brought that same easygoing charm into living rooms every week. The car accident in 1984 put a pause on everything, but she kept singing after a long recovery.

She started out playing in a family band with her sisters around Texas. After signing with Capitol in 1969, hits like 'Sleeping Single in a Double Bed' and 'I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool' kept her on the radio through the 1970s. The TV show ran for several seasons starting in 1980.

Barbara Mandrell was born in Houston, Texas on Christmas Day in 1948. She grew up playing music with her sisters Louise and Irlene in a family band they called The Mandrells, performing around their local area. Her father Irby and mother Mary Ellen were both musicians, so the household was filled with music from the start.

She signed with Capitol Records in 1969 and released her debut album 'Midnight Oil.' That record included 'Sleeping Single in a Double Bed,' which became her first real hit. Over the next decade she had a string of successful singles including 'I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool,' 'If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right,' and 'In The Name Of Love.'

In 1980 she started hosting the television variety show 'Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters' with her sisters. The program ran for several seasons and showed her comfort with both music and comedy on camera. Four years later she was in a serious car accident that caused multiple broken bones and required a long recovery period.
