Background notes

Archive material and source history

Bariloche formed in 1988 in Argentina with four members: guitarist and vocalist José Gabriel 'Jopo' Rainieri, bassist Andrés 'Andy' López, keyboardist Rafael 'Rafa' García, and drummer Pablo 'Pablito' Ortiz. They started playing rock music with folk touches, and in 1992 they put out their first album themselves, 'Nada que Pueda Pararte.'

Their songs often dealt with love and loss through metaphor, which connected with listeners but also stirred things up sometimes. In 1995, the track 'Pass' drew criticism from some who read it as being about drug addiction. The band kept going their own way, releasing more albums like 'Dejando Atrás' in 1998 and 'La Ley del Umbral' in 2002.

Bariloche's music stayed atmospheric and lyrically focused across their seven studio albums. They never became a huge commercial act, but their particular blend of rock and storytelling found a steady audience in Argentina and beyond.
