Base S/A formed in São Paulo in 1989 with Luiz Tatit on vocals, André Abujamra on guitar, Luca Bori on bass, and Celso Simões on drums. They worked with elements of bossa nova, jazz, and experimental rock, but mostly avoided the usual categories.
Their 1994 debut album 'Abrigo' gave them their most recognizable song. The title track 'Abrigo' had a spare, haunting quality that caught attention, and other songs like 'Patricia' and 'Pra Você' showed their lean, melodic side. The record found an audience without sounding like much else happening at the time.
They kept making music through the 1990s, but their approach, lyrically direct, musically unadorned, didn't always fit with commercial expectations. Their songs tended to be about ordinary moments and quiet observations, as in 'Sem Tempo pra Você' and 'Raimundo', rather than grand statements. They were a São Paulo band that sounded like one: grounded, a little interior, not trying to fill a room.
