Battles formed in New York City in the early 2000s as an experimental rock band. Their sound pulls from math rock and electronica, built around complex rhythms and layered instrumentation. The group released their first album, 'Mirrored,' in 2007, which included the track 'Atlas.'
Their 2007 single 'The Line' features a looping bassline and interlocking guitar patterns, with vocals from Tyondai Braxton. Braxton left the band in 2010, and Battles continued as a trio with Ian Williams, Dave Konopka, and John Stanier. They've put out several albums since, including 'Gloss Drop' in 2011 and 'La Di Da Di' in 2015.
Later records like 'Juice B Crypts' from 2019 and 'Automata I' from 2021 show the band still working with dense, rhythmic arrangements. Songs such as 'Ice Cream' and 'Ddiamondd' have the same precise, kinetic feel as their earlier material.
