Editor's note

Bellize, the Brazilian rock band from Rio

A Rio de Janeiro band that broke through with the hit '14 de Dezembro' in 2012.

For a quick sense of their sound, try 'A.N.A (Ainda Não Acabou)' or 'Vem Dançar Pra Mim.' They've got that mix of rock drive and melodic ease.

They're one of those Brazilian rock acts that found a national audience without losing their local roots. The song 'A.N.A (Ainda Não Acabou)' shows their knack for blending alternative rock with pop hooks. Their name itself nods to Belém, where vocalist Flavio Basso grew up.

Bellize formed in Rio in 2007 and released a self-titled debut in 2010 that didn't catch on. Their second album, '14 de Dezembro,' in 2012 changed things, with the title track becoming a hit despite plagiarism claims. They've since put out two more albums, 'Mais um Dia' in 2015 and 'Radioatividade' in 2018.

Bellize formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, with Flavio Basso on vocals and guitar, Felipe Machado on guitar and vocals, Fernando Monteiro on bass, and Roger Franco on drums. Their name references Belém, where Basso grew up. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2010 but didn't catch on right away.

Things changed with their second album, '14 de Dezembro,' in 2012. The title track became a national hit in Brazil, though it also brought accusations of plagiarism from a folk song. The band denied it, and the issue was settled. Other songs from that period include 'O Circo de Um Palhaço Só' and 'A.N.A (Ainda Não Acabou).'

They've put out two more albums since then: 'Mais um Dia' in 2015 and 'Radioatividade' in 2018. Their sound mixes alternative rock with pop elements, and they've won some awards, including Best Rock Song at the MTV Video Music Brazil Awards.
