Bello Markes came out of Salvador, Bahia, where the rhythms of samba and axé are part of the air. The band, fronted by the singer of the same name, put out its debut album 'Axé Bahia' in 1983. That record set up their sound, which mixed those local rhythms with straightforward romantic lyrics.
They had a revolving lineup of musicians over time. The singer's brother, Carlinhos Brown, has played percussion with them. They've also worked with other Brazilian artists like Ivete Sangalo and Daniela Mercury.
Their song 'Volta Pra Casa Me Ama Denovo' came out in 1996 and became a hit in Brazil. In 2019, that same track was at the center of a dispute when some accused the band of cultural appropriation for using elements of indigenous music. The band defended their choices, but the episode pointed to wider conversations about those practices in the country's music.
