Belô Baiana formed in Salvador, Bahia, with Isadora Canto and Luísa Maita on lead vocals, Léo Macedo on guitar, Célio Pontes on bass, and Wilson Negreiros on percussion. Their sound pulls from samba, axé, and reggae, with touches of funk and rock. They released their self-titled debut in 2015, followed by Recria in 2018 and Samba Sem Compasso in 2021.
Their song 'O Troco' went viral in 2017, drawing attention for lyrics that addressed police violence against Black Brazilians. The track sparked debate online, with some criticizing its message while others supported it. Other songs like 'Arrocha Diferente' and 'Ele Só Quer Ficar' show their range within Brazilian rhythms.
As a band with women at the front in a scene often dominated by men, they faced early skepticism but kept playing. Their music often touches on social themes and cultural identity, without leaning too hard on any single genre.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
