Benab formed in Algiers in 1987 around three childhood friends: Sofiane Saïdi on vocals, Redouane Bouchti on guitar, and Mounir Boussouf on percussion. They drew from traditional Algerian folk music, reggae, and rock, creating a sound that didn't fit neatly into the prevailing musical norms of the time.
Their song 'Mon Poto' became a viral sensation in the early 2000s. The lyrics, which dealt with love, friendship, and betrayal, were interpreted by some as commentary on political corruption and social inequality. This led to accusations of sedition and threats from both government and conservative elements.
Despite these challenges, Benab released several albums including their 1998 debut 'Ya Rayah' and their 2002 self-titled album that featured 'Mon Poto'. Their 2005 album 'L'Orchestre des Pauvres' marked a shift toward a different musical direction.
