Benny Latimore was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1959. He started singing in church, which gave him a foundation in gospel music. In 1982, he joined a group called Louis Williams and the Emotions as a backing vocalist, learning the ropes of rhythm and blues before going out on his own.
He signed with Capitol Records in 1986 and released his debut album 'Just Me and You.' The title track from that album, 'Move And Groove Together,' became his biggest hit. It had a simple, catchy groove and straightforward lyrics about connection that people responded to.
After that initial success, he kept recording through the 1990s with albums like 'The Only Way Is Up' and 'I'm Not in Love.' His voice had a smooth, unforced quality that worked well with the soul and R&B material he was making at the time.
