Benny Sings is the stage name of Dutch singer-songwriter Tim van Berkestijn, who grew up in Voorburg. His music draws from soul influences like Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, though he works mostly as a solo artist with various collaborators. He started out with a band called The Gospel Session before releasing his debut album 'Champagne People' in 2011.
His songs tend toward smooth, intimate melodies, heard on tracks like 'Rolled Up' and 'Not Enough.' In 2014, 'Rolled Up' became the center of a plagiarism dispute with American songwriter Brett Dennen, which Benny Sings later acknowledged as inspiration. He has since put out albums such as 'Alt Right Feelings' in 2016 and 'Music' in 2020.
For live shows, he has worked with musicians like drummer Joost Kroon and bassist Mark Hoogstad. Other songs in his catalog include 'Big Brown Eyes' and 'Everything I Know.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
